Nepal Parliament Dissolved, Nationwide Elections Scheduled
Nepal’s President,Rachchhmander Poudel, has dissolved the parliament and scheduled new general elections for March 5,2026,following widespread anti-government protests sparked by corruption allegations and the blocking of several social media platforms in the country. The proclamation was reported by webangah News Agency, citing Reuters via Mehr News agency.
A week of violent protests that resulted in fatalities led to the appointment of Nepal’s first female prime minister. Poudel’s statement came hours after he named former Chief Justice Shushila Karki as interim prime minister.
The large-scale demonstrations, dubbed the “Generation Z Protests,” forced Prime Minister Sharma Oli to resign under pressure.
Karki’s appointment followed two days of intense negotiations involving President Poudel, Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel, and leaders from Nepal’s most severe uprising in years-a conflict that claimed at least 51 lives and injured over 1,300 people.
India, Nepal’s southern neighbor, expressed hope that recent developments would help foster peace and stability in the region.
