Russia Considers Naval Base in Sudan Amid US Concerns

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the Russian embassy in Sudan has addressed reports regarding the potential establishment of a Russian naval facility in the country. The embassy stated that media coverage surrounding the issue aims to heighten long-standing anxieties about Moscow’s presence in the Red Sea.
The embassy emphasized that a recent Wall Street Journal report lacked substantiating evidence.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Sudan’s military government proposed allowing Russia to build its first naval base in Africa, providing Moscow with a strategic position overlooking crucial trade routes in the Red Sea.
According to Sudanese officials, this agreement would grant Moscow a strategic advantage as it seeks to expand its influence in Africa. The development is viewed with concern by the United States, which aims to prevent Russian and Chinese control over African ports.
The report further indicated that the Sudanese military government presented a 25-year proposal to Russian authorities in October, granting Moscow the right to station up to 300 military personnel and dock up to four warships, including nuclear-powered vessels, at Port Sudan or another Red Sea facility yet to be determined.
