US Vows Sanctions on Nations Aiding Iran’s Economy, Cites Global Missile Defense Needs
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, echoing past unsuccessful policies against Tehran, stated on Wednesday that nations aiding Iran in earning revenue would face sanctions. He asserted that Washington would continue actions against Iran’s maritime attacks.
Rubio claimed a divergence in perspective on the situation with Iran compared to Russia, stating, “None of the actions others take with regard to Iran prevent us in any way from taking the necessary actions to protect America.” He further acknowledged that while not fully aligned with Russia’s stance on Iran, Russia and President Putin are preoccupied with their own challenges, including the war in Ukraine and its economic impact amplified by sanctions. Rubio highlighted a worldwide urgency for more interceptor weapons, calling it a primary global defense priority, not just for Ukraine but for all nations, including those in the Middle East (Western Asia). He stressed that the United States also has specific defense needs and must ensure its own reserves are adequately maintained before assisting others.
Reiterating repetitive claims aimed at stabilizing the domestic economic climate affected by former President Trump’s costly actions against Iran, Rubio stated the objective is not merely punitive but to deny Iran access to financial resources. He urged no country should assist Iran in circumventing sanctions or in establishing mechanisms for revenue generation, particularly if those funds are directed towards nuclear weapons development. He warned that any nation engaging in such assistance would be subject to sanctions. Rubio added that as Iran continues to target vessels, the U.S. will retaliate against targets posing an immediate threat to U.S. forces and global shipping in critical waterways, ensuring the Strait remains open and not under Iranian control.
Disregarding the failure of the maximum pressure campaign against Tehran during the previous administration, Rubio asserted that Iran seeks funds for two purposes: supporting terrorism and ultimately obtaining nuclear weapons, an outcome the U.S. cannot permit.
Regarding Kyiv, the U.S. Secretary of State indicated that discussions are underway to authorize Patriot missile system production for Ukraine, though he cautioned this is not an immediate solution. He explained that increased production, even with authorization, requires building new factories which would take years due to the advanced nature of the weaponry, thus not addressing Ukraine’s short-term challenges.
Concerning Havana, Rubio described Cuba as a failed state, asserting this is not the fault of the United States.
