Oman Welcomes Yemeni Agreement to Free Thousands of Prisoners

Oman has welcomed a prisoner exchange agreement signed between the Saudi-backed government and Yemen’s Ansar Allah, which will see nearly 3,000 detainees released. The deal, mediated in Muscat, has been praised by the UN and Red Cross.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Oman’s Foreign Ministry has welcomed a prisoner exchange agreement signed between the Saudi-backed Aden government and Yemen‘s Ansar Allah movement, which is expected to free nearly 3,000 detainees. The deal, finalized in Muscat, marks a significant step toward resolving humanitarian issues in Yemen.

In a statement, Oman’s Foreign Ministry expressed appreciation for the positive atmosphere during the negotiations and commended the cooperation of Saudi Arabia, the efforts of the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, and the International Committee of the Red Cross. The ministry expressed hope that this agreement would pave the way for resolving other outstanding issues in Yemen.

The agreement involves the exchange of approximately 1,700 prisoners held by Ansar Allah for 1,200 detainees from the opposing side, including seven Saudis and 23 Sudanese. Abdulqader Al-Murtada, head of the National Committee for Prisoners’ Affairs affiliated with Ansar Allah, confirmed the terms and thanked Omani officials for hosting the talks.

Mohammed Abdulsalam, head of the Sanaa government’s negotiating delegation, stated that the agreement was reached in Muscat with Saudi-backed representatives, securing the release of thousands of Yemeni, Saudi, and Sudanese prisoners. UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg also praised the deal, urging continued progress toward further prisoner releases.
