Iraqi Parliament Seeks Legal Resolution as Supreme Judicial Council Head Mediates Speaker Election Dispute

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Faiq Zaidan, President of Iraq‘s Supreme Judicial Council, intervened in parliamentary deadlock by holding emergency consultations with acting Speaker Amer al-Fayez and other leaders. The meetings aimed to clarify legal frameworks for finalizing the election of the second deputy speaker after candidate Shawqan Abdullah withdrew, with Farhad al-Atroushi nominated as his replacement.
Jamal Kujar, a lawmaker from the Kurdistan Islamic Union bloc, confirmed Zaidan’s presence in parliament was specifically to address constitutional ambiguities surrounding the deputy speaker selection process. The discussions, held in the Constitutional Hall, later expanded to include newly elected Speaker Habib al-Halbousi and First Deputy Adnan al-Fayhan.
Parliamentary Secretary General also participated in the high-stakes session, which focused on validating legal procedures to complete the leadership structure. The intervention comes amid prolonged disputes over procedural compliance in appointing the chamber’s second-highest position.
