Venezuela Appoints New Commander of Presidential Honor Guard Amid Tensions with US

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Venezuela‘s interim President Delcy Rodríguez has named General Gustavo López as the new commander of the Presidential Honor Guard and director general of the Military Counterintelligence Directorate. The appointment comes as Rodríguez emphasized in a televised address that the Venezuelan people are “unstoppable” and will never cease their defiance.
Rodríguez stated, “Our armed forces will resolutely defend our sovereignty, security, and constitution.” She also addressed recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the administration of Caracas until elections are held, asserting, “The Venezuelan government is not under the control of any foreign power.”
The announcement follows the U.S. military incursion into Venezuelan territory on January 3, which resulted in the abduction of the country’s legitimate President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, who are now facing trial on U.S. soil.
