Senior Cleric Praised for Role in Islamic Unity Efforts

Albert Korganov, a member of the Coordinating Council of Muslims of Southern Russia, has spoken about the late Ayatollah, highlighting his significant contributions to Islamic scholarship and the promotion of unity among Muslims.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Albert Korganov, a member of the Coordinating Council of Muslims of Southern Russia, has discussed the late Ayatollah, offering insights into his intellectual and spiritual legacy. The detailed account was published by Mehr News Agency.

Korganov began by explaining the esteemed title of ‘Ayatollah,’ noting that it signifies a high religious and scholarly position, attained after rigorous study in Islamic sciences and reaching the level of Ijtihad, reflecting years of dedicated academic and spiritual pursuit. He pointed out that even in Europe, the precise meaning of this title is not always fully understood by the public and media.

He further elaborated on the background of the Ayatollah, stating that he hailed from a religious family, with his father being a respected and well-known cleric in Iran. This familial lineage and upbringing were familiar and held in high regard by many Iranians.

Korganov emphasized that the Ayatollah passed away while actively fulfilling his leadership responsibilities and duties. He did not succumb in retirement or in secrecy, but rather remained engaged in his social and leadership role until the end of his life. He concluded that the Ayatollah’s life ended not in defeat, but with a steadfast position as a trusted leader for a significant segment of the Iranian population.

He also touched upon the systematic efforts within the Islamic Republic of Iran to foster rapprochement between Islamic sects, a process also involving other religious leaders. Korganov stressed the importance of this initiative in rectifying misunderstandings, mitigating rumors, and countering distorted narratives that have originated from certain Western Orientalist and Islamic studies circles, which have sometimes led to misinterpretations of Islamic concepts.

As an example, Korganov cited the distortion of the concept of ‘martyrdom’ (shahid) in some incorrect interpretations, diverging from its original meaning. He clarified that in Islamic culture, a martyr is someone who sacrifices their life in defense of their faith, homeland, or noble values. He also noted instances of simplification or distortion of cultural and geographical concepts, which have attempted to portray nations and cultures as entirely separate and unrelated.

Furthermore, Korganov highlighted historical attempts within Islamic thought to create a deep division between Sunni and Shia Muslims, despite their numerous practical commonalities. In this context, he commended the scholarly and intellectual endeavors of Ayatollah Khamenei, along with other prominent scholars such as Ayatollah Khomeini, in elucidating shared principles and reducing misunderstandings. He stated that through a scholarly and religious approach, they strived to correct many of these erroneous perceptions and present a more accurate portrayal of Islam and the wider Muslim world.
