Massive Crowds Converge on Mashhad for Martyr Leader’s Funeral Amidst U.S. Strikes

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Al Jazeera has released images depicting a massive turnout of Iranians in the streets of Mashhad, the holy city. This surge in attendance coincides with Iran’s preparations for the funeral ceremonies of its martyred leader in Mashhad.

Al Jazeera reported that the funeral ceremony in the martyred leader’s birthplace follows a week of processions, marches, and mourning rituals held across various cities in Iran and Iraq. The transfer of the martyred leader’s body from Iraq to Mashhad was preceded by grand ceremonies in Tehran, Qom, Najaf, and Karbala. The Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) of Iraq announced that over 2.3 million people participated in the Najaf ceremony alone. Millions are also reported to have attended the procession in Tehran, an event Iranian officials have described as the largest public gathering in the country’s contemporary history.

Participants at the Mashhad event held Iranian flags, portraits of Ayatollah Khamenei, and banners bearing revolutionary slogans, calling for retribution against the United States. Al Jazeera further reported that despite U.S. strikes targeting the Tehran-Mashhad railway line the previous night, Iranian officials stated these attacks would not disrupt the ceremony.

In addition to Al Jazeera, Al Mayadeen also reported that, despite U.S. aggression against several railway lines, people from all over Iran have made their way to Mashhad to attend the ceremony. The Yemeni Al-Mashhad media outlet also highlighted this development.
