Yemen Reportedly Preparing to Block Bab al-Mandeb Strait, Telegraph Claims

The British newspaper The Telegraph has claimed that Yemen is reportedly preparing to block the Bab al-Mandeb strait, a vital global maritime trade route, as part of a broader strategic pressure campaign.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, The British newspaper The Telegraph has claimed that Yemen is reportedly preparing to block the Bab al-Mandeb strait, one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes. The report suggests that Yemen has not yet taken any operational steps and is awaiting what it deems an opportune moment within Iran’s wider campaign to increase pressure on the United States and its allies. Should the Bab al-Mandeb strait be closed, commercial vessels would be compelled to undertake a significantly longer journey around the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, leading to a substantial increase in shipping times and transportation costs.

The Telegraph added in its report that the alleged strategy mirrors existing concerns regarding the Strait of Hormuz, another critical global energy chokepoint whose disruptions have repeatedly raised alarms about global oil supplies and international trade. The Bab al-Mandeb strait connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea, serving as a vital gateway for commercial and energy shipments transiting between Europe and Asia via the Suez Canal. Any prolonged disruption to transit through this strait could have significant consequences for global supply chains and maritime trade.

According to The Telegraph, Yemen is currently holding back from implementing this action, while simultaneously monitoring regional developments as part of Iran’s broader strategic pressure campaign. It is noteworthy that the United States’ escalations in the region have led to insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandeb, whereas these routes were previously safe for vessel traffic prior to Washington’s aggressive actions.
