Romania Expels Russian Embassy Staffer After Drone Incident

Romania has declared a Russian embassy employee persona non grata and ordered their expulsion within five days, following the downing of a drone that entered the country’s airspace over the Black Sea.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that one employee of the Russian Embassy in Bucharest has been declared an unwelcome person. This decision comes in the wake of a drone incident within the country’s borders. The statement issued by the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs specified that the Russian embassy employee must leave Romanian territory within five days.

This development follows Romania’s announcement on Sunday that it would summon the Russian ambassador after its military, a member of NATO, shot down a drone. This marked the third drone to be intercepted by Romanian forces within a three-day period.

Romanian Minister of Defense, Radu Miruță, stated that an F-16 fighter jet belonging to Romania successfully downed a drone over the Black Sea just five minutes after it entered Romanian airspace. Oana Tănuță, the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, had previously indicated that the country would summon the Russian ambassador in response to these “repeated violations” of its airspace.
