Oman Proposes Joint Management of Strait of Hormuz with Iran
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Reuters, citing an Arab official from the Persian Gulf region, has reported that Oman’s proposal to Iran aims to establish a joint regional mechanism for managing ship movements in the Strait of Hormuz through a voluntary fee payment system.
Reuters claimed that this proposal enjoys the support and approval of regional countries.
The news agency asserted that according to Oman’s proposal, Iran would not exercise unilateral control or influence over this strategic waterway. Instead, the Strait of Hormuz would be managed through a consortium or a collective coordination mechanism.
The proposal includes voluntary payments from countries, companies, and other parties utilizing the Strait of Hormuz. These funds are earmarked for essential services such as enhancing maritime security, environmental protection against pollution, and supporting joint search and rescue operations.
The report indicates that Oman’s proposal draws inspiration from the mechanism employed in the Strait of Malacca in Southeast Asia, where countries voluntarily contribute to costs associated with international shipping activities.
