Russia Enhances Black Sea Convoy Security Amid Escalating Maritime Attacks

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Russia is boosting security for shipping in the Azov-Black Sea region and developing alternative cargo routes. This move comes in response to a significant escalation of maritime attacks by both belligerents in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, as reported by Mehr News Agency, citing Reuters.

The Russian Ministry of Transport stated that a special task force has been established to identify new routes and reroute cargo to other transportation methods. This initiative is a direct response to the tense situation in the Sea of Azov, exacerbated by hostile drone attacks targeting maritime vessels.

Russia stands as the world’s largest wheat exporter, with Ukraine also being a major agricultural exporter. Russia has indicated that it targets vessels associated with Ukraine’s military hardware.

The Russian Grain Union issued a warning on Friday, suggesting that Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian ships and ports could halt grain exports via the Black Sea in the near future. Such a disruption, the union cautioned, would lead to price increases and potentially exacerbate food insecurity in Africa and the Middle East.

Similarly, Ukraine’s largest agricultural association has recently raised concerns that Russian attacks on vessels near the southern port of Odesa are limiting Ukrainian exports during a critical harvest period. This could have a ripple effect on global food supplies.
