UNICEF Employee Accused of Espionage for Israel, UN Confirms Investigation

The United Nations has confirmed that UNICEF is taking action against an employee accused of spying for Israel during their previous tenure with the organization. The allegations involve the transfer of confidential information from the UN to Israeli officials.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, UNICEF is investigating allegations that one of its employees spied for the Israeli regime during their prior role within the United Nations. Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, stated that UNICEF is aware of the serious claims concerning one of its staff members.

Haq emphasized that if these claims are proven true, such actions would contravene employee obligations under the UN Charter, international civil service standards, and the principle of impartiality.

Investigations by the news site Drupe, based on information released by the hacking group Hanzala, suggest that a person identified as Maya Vashloner, the UNICEF Country Director in Washington, provided confidential information from the UN to two Israeli officials. This data reportedly dates back to 2014 and 2015, when Vashloner was with the UN Population Fund.

Among Vashloner’s communications with Israeli officials was a report on the visit of Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, to Washington. This email was sent at a time when the Israeli regime was facing scrutiny from the Human Rights Council regarding the 2014 Gaza conflict.

The report detailed Al Hussein’s meetings with US officials, members of Congress, and Israeli lobbying groups. It also noted concerns raised during meetings at Al Hussein’s office that congressional anger over UN investigations into the Gaza war could jeopardize US funding for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
