China’s Foreign Minister to Visit South Korea for First Time in Five Years

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will make an official visit to South Korea from August 19-20, marking his first trip to the country in approximately five years, according to South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Park Do-soon confirmed on Tuesday that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will travel to South Korea for official talks from August 19 to 20. This marks Wang’s first visit in roughly five years.

The invitation, extended by South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, will encompass discussions on bilateral relations, the situation on the Korean Peninsula, and regional issues. A formal dinner is scheduled, and a meeting with President Lee Jae-myung is reportedly under consideration.

The spokesperson noted, “This visit is expected to be an opportunity to review the achievements of revitalizing South Korea-China relations ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province in November and to prepare for the next phase of high-level exchanges.”
