Iran Joins Founding Committee of Global Spatial Information Alliance

According to the Economic Desk of Webangah News Agency, the National Cartographic Center of Iran has officially joined the founding committee of the Global Spatial Information Industry Alliance (WAGI). The organization was invited to become a founding member by the United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management for Asia and the Pacific (UN-GGIM-AP).

This invitation was extended during the 15th session of UN-GGIM-AP, held in Sanya, China. At this session, which included the heads of the five working groups of UN-GGIM-AP, Japan formally proposed to host the next Bureau meeting in 2027.

Following the conclusion of the UN-GGIM-AP Bureau meeting, the co-chairs of UN-GGIM-AP and the head of UN-GGKIC formally invited Iran’s National Cartographic Center to join the founding committee of the Global Spatial Information Industry Alliance.

The Global Spatial Information Industry Alliance (WAGI), launched by the UN Global Geospatial Information Knowledge and Innovation Centre (UN-GGKIC), will operate as an international organization for the global spatial information industry. Its primary objectives are to establish an open and collaborative global network, provide a platform for international industrial cooperation, accelerate the integration of global industrial chains and innovation, and promote technological innovation, knowledge sharing, and the joint development of capacities and standards.

The alliance also aims to advance balanced and sustainable global development within the spatial information industry, enhance the support capabilities for its members and related organizations, and contribute to achieving the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. As a founding member, the National Cartographic Center will participate in the development of the alliance’s charter, strategic plan, operational and support mechanisms, and recommendations for the first annual work plan.

It has been proposed that the secretariat for the alliance be established in Deqing, China, at the site of the UN Innovation Center. By joining this alliance, the National Cartographic Center will have a voice in key decisions regarding its establishment and will play a role in promoting global cooperation and the balanced development of the spatial information industry.
