China Expands Military Presence with New Joint Training Center in Laos

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, China has established a new joint training and support center with Laos, along with an aviation academy, at an airport located about 50 kilometers north of Vientiane, the capital of Laos. This development, based on data published by Mehr News Agency citing Reuters, signifies an expansion of China’s military footprint in the region.

Satellite imagery analyzed by Reuters reveals that construction on these facilities commenced in late 2025. The site now features an asphalted runway, a taxiway, and several new buildings. China’s Ministry of National Defense has stated that the center will be utilized for training Air Force pilots and is not directed against any third party.

However, China has not provided specific details regarding the number of personnel, equipment, or the full scope of facilities deployed at this new center. Nevertheless, some security analysts believe this facility could enable a continuous Chinese military logistical presence in Laos, thereby strengthening military relations between Beijing and Vientiane.

This initiative follows China’s previous establishment of similar joint support and training centers, including one at the Ream Naval Base in Cambodia and a logistical base in Djibouti. Reuters also reports that China is actively expanding its military infrastructure across various parts of Southeast Asia.
