UN Human Rights Chief Demands Immediate Lifting of U.S. Sanctions on Cuba

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has issued a statement calling for the immediate removal of U.S. sanctions against Cuba, citing severe negative impacts on the Cuban population and their access to essential goods and services.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has declared that sanctions imposed on Cuba‘s fuel sector at the beginning of 2026, along with intensified other sanctions, have directly harmed the country’s citizens, particularly the most vulnerable, exacerbating their living conditions and humanitarian situation.

Türk added that Cuba is experiencing shortages of medicine and medical equipment, which is dangerously impacting the nation’s health conditions.

He further stated that children are losing their lives due to the lack of essential medical supplies, describing the situation as unacceptable and demanding the immediate lifting of these sanctions. The U.S. sanctions have directly affected the ability of Cuban citizens to access essential services and goods, including water and food.

Just yesterday, Miguel Díaz-Canel, the President of Cuba, outlined the U.S. agenda for his country, stating that Washington is either seeking to create chaos and social unrest in Cuba, attempting to gain control of the nation’s economy, or resorting to military action and aggression.
