Israel’s Media Reacts to Iran-US Understanding as Strategic Setback

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Israeli media circles are reacting to the signing of an understanding between Iran and the United States. Al Jazeera’s analysis of Israeli media responses to the agreement between Iran and the U.S. indicates a period of heightened tension in the relationship between U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran earlier today, which paves the way for a new round of negotiations. This development has exposed their widening disagreements.
The signing of this memorandum of understanding was perceived as a political and strategic shock for Tel Aviv, as Israel considers its provisions to weaken Netanyahu’s assumptions of “absolute victory” against Iran and to limit the Israeli army’s freedom of action on the northern front.
The Israeli newspaper Maariv reported that American pressure on the Israeli cabinet has extended to the issue of withdrawal from southern Lebanon and the Golan Heights in Syria, and a reduction in military actions on the northern front, in order to maintain the political trajectory of the Trump administration with Tehran.
The report states that Washington informed Tel Aviv during closed-door negotiations that their demands go beyond merely de-escalating the battlefield, including withdrawal from five points in southern Lebanon. The U.S. administration is preparing to intensify pressure on the Netanyahu cabinet following the signing of the memorandum of understanding.
Israeli sources also indicate indirect American messages suggesting that the current crisis could escalate from mere diplomatic disagreements to specific actions, including delays in weapons shipments, restrictions on operational aid, and perhaps even measures that Israeli officials describe as an arms embargo.
The signing of the aforementioned understanding has ignited a wave of anger in political and media circles close to Netanyahu. They described the U.S.-Iran understanding as a strategic failure for Tel Aviv, stating that Trump has made significant concessions to Tehran.
Media outlets close to Netanyahu, most of which were strong supporters of Trump, have begun criticizing the U.S. President and his team. An anchor on Channel 14, which is close to Netanyahu, used derogatory terms against U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and accused Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump’s envoys, of “antisemitism.”
