Venezuela Earthquake Toll Surpasses 5,000, Injured Exceed 16,000

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Venezuela has experienced a significant human tragedy following two powerful earthquakes, with the number of fatalities now exceeding 5,119. Jorge Rodríguez, the President of Venezuela’s National Assembly, reported the latest casualty figures via social media, stating that the death toll has increased by 50, bringing the total to 5,119. The number of injured individuals stands at 16,740.

Rodríguez also indicated that more than 1,350 aftershocks have been recorded in the affected region since the initial earthquakes struck. He cautioned that damaged buildings continue to pose a significant risk and urged citizens to exercise necessary precautions.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) had previously reported on June 24th that two earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude, struck Venezuela with just 39 seconds separating them. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) estimated in a statement released on June 26th that the direct physical damage from these earthquakes amounts to approximately $6.7 billion.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing in the devastated areas, and concerns persist regarding a potential increase in the number of casualties and injured.
