Canada Imposes Tariffs on Hundreds of U.S. Goods in Retaliation

Canada announced retaliatory tariffs on approximately 700 American products, valued at $27.6 billion Canadian dollars, effective September 8th, in direct response to new tariffs imposed by the United States.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that the country will impose tariffs on imports of approximately 700 American goods, worth $27.6 billion Canadian dollars, starting September 8th. This move is a direct response to new tariffs implemented by the United States.

Carney emphasized that Canada‘s response would be “dollar for dollar,” stating, “We have been attacked, and we cannot accept what the United States has proposed.” He further elaborated that Washington has presented new conditions that are “uneconomic and unfair,” including restrictions on Canada’s ability to enter into new trade agreements.

The Prime Minister added that Canada will return to the negotiating table when the United States adopts a correct and logical stance, asserting that Ottawa will never accept the notion of Canada being subordinate to the United States.

Previously, Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne, in response to hostile U.S. actions, had declared that Canada would impose tariffs on American goods in a retaliatory measure. Champagne stated that Canada would implement reciprocal tariffs ranging from 15%, 25%, to 50% on $27.6 billion worth of goods imported from the United States, effective September 8th. These tariffs are set to apply to about 700 types of American products.

In a separate development, U.S. President Donald Trump posted on his Truth Social account that Canada has been taking advantage of the United States for decades.
