Russia Warns of Direct Conflict Risk Among Nuclear Powers Due to European Policies

Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations has warned that European policies concerning nuclear weapons are increasing the risk of direct confrontation between nuclear-armed states, rather than enhancing their security.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Gennady Gatilov, Russia‘s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, stated in an interview with Sputnik that the nuclear weapons policies of European countries do not serve to protect their own security. He added that these policies escalate the danger of direct conflict between nuclear powers.

Gatilov expressed concern over France and the United Kingdom’s efforts to bolster their nuclear capabilities, London’s readiness to deploy U.S. nuclear weapons, and nuclear cooperation between Paris, Germany, and Poland. He also cited Berlin’s stance on possessing nuclear weapons as a worrying development.

“All these actions deal a major blow to the nuclear non-proliferation regime,” Gatilov asserted. “It is naive to think that these policies strengthen the security of these countries; on the contrary, anti-Russian positions in the shadow of these military programs increase the risk of direct conflict among nuclear powers. Russia will take the necessary measures.”
