Italy Suspends Schengen Agreements with Spain Amidst Migrant Influx
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Italy announced on Friday evening that it has suspended its Schengen agreements with Spain. This decision comes as a direct response to the substantial influx of migrants from Morocco into the Spanish region of Ceuta.
The Italian Ministry of Interior issued a statement, also indicating an agreement with Paris to bolster controls along the Franco-Italian land border. This joint effort aims to prevent the transit of undocumented migrants.
Italy’s rationale for these actions stems from the continuous rise in migrant arrivals in Ceuta, a territory under Spanish sovereignty. The Italian government asserts that more decisive measures are necessary to safeguard the external borders of the European Union.
The Schengen Area agreements facilitate passport-free travel across 29 European countries. However, member states retain the prerogative to temporarily reinstate border controls on grounds of security or public order.
