Pentagon Official Assures US Commitment to Asia, Seeks Partner Responsibility

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, a senior Pentagon official claimed on Monday that the United States is not separating from Asia, but is instead striving to maintain a favorable balance of power in the Indo-Pacific region. The official emphasized a desire for greater responsibility and partnership from allies, rather than dependence.

Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, Colin Kahl, stated in a speech in Manila that the U.S. is certainly not disengaging from Asia. He clarified that the United States is not leaving the region but is in fact strengthening its presence to ensure a desirable balance of power where it matters most.

Kahl highlighted that maintaining this balance in the Indo-Pacific necessitates deterrence along the first island chain. He pointed to what he described as a growing U.S. military commitment to the region. The first island chain refers to an area stretching from Japan through Taiwan, the Philippines, and Borneo.

The official argued that this strategy cannot rest solely on American forces, asserting that allies need to invest more in their own security. He explained that when the U.S. asks allies and partners to step up and invest more in their self-defense and take ownership of their sovereign security, it does not signify abandonment. Instead, he stated, the U.S. is seeking partners, not protectorates.
