Ukraine Seeks Interceptor Missiles from Japan, Cites Defense Needs

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has formally requested interceptor missiles from Japan, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced air defense capabilities. In an interview published on Monday with Kyodo News, Shmyhal stated, “I want to ask you for just one thing. Anti-ballistic missiles.”

Shmyhal expressed hope that Japan would supply Kyiv with advanced air defense systems. He elaborated on the significance of interceptor missiles, stating, “The most important thing we need is to protect our people and our infrastructure. In this winter season.” He further conveyed his optimism, telling the Japanese news agency, “I am very hopeful about your country and I am counting on it.”

Ukraine has been equipped with Patriot interceptor missiles by a coalition of Western nations, but its existing stockpiles are reportedly dwindling. Japan, a defense ally of the United States, is one of the manufacturers of Patriot surface-to-air interceptor missiles under American license. However, Japan’s arms exports have historically been prohibited under the country’s three principles concerning the transfer of defense equipment and technology to countries experiencing conflict.

In April, Tokyo revised its restrictions on defense equipment exports. A statement regarding these changes indicated that the modified conditions for the transfer of defense equipment and technology require countries to sign agreements with Japan on the protection of related classified information to be eligible for lethal weapons transfers. Nevertheless, even if an agreement for the transfer of defense equipment and technology is signed, the provision of interceptor missiles would still require a green light from the Prime Minister of Japan, according to Kyodo News.
