UN Chief Guterres: Major Powers Must Recognize Their Power Limitations

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized in an interview with the Financial Times that the United States’ stalemate with Iran and Russia’s inability to achieve a swift victory in Ukraine have starkly revealed the limitations of major powers. Guterres warned that a multipolar world could descend into increased competition and eventual confrontation if international institutions do not adapt to the new order. He stated, “It is time for the superpowers to understand the limits of their power. If you look at recent events, you see that the ability of superpowers to impose their will, their power, or their force in a number of situations has been severely limited.” Guterres pointed to the situation between the United States and Iran, noting that while the U.S. expected Iran to capitulate after an unspecified February attack, the Iranian system continues to resist six months later, controlling the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most critical energy waterway. The UN chief reiterated that superpowers must comprehend that circumstances have changed, and the standing of various countries in the global arena has also shifted.
