Canada to Impose Tariffs on U.S. Goods in Retaliation

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Canada‘s Finance Minister, François-Philippe Champagne, has declared that in response to “hostile actions” by the United States, Canada will implement reciprocal tariffs on U.S. products.

Champagne stated that Canada will impose retaliatory tariffs of up to 15%, 25%, or 50% on $27.6 billion worth of goods imported from the United States, effective September 8. These tariffs will affect approximately 700 types of American products.

The announcement follows strong statements from U.S. President Donald Trump, who posted on his Truth Social account that Canada has been taking advantage of the U.S. for decades. President Trump previously alleged that Canadians have imposed tariffs of 400% or more on American agricultural products, leading to the bankruptcy of many American companies. He also mentioned that Canada had refused to certify Gulfstream jets for ten years, which he personally intervened to resolve, suggesting Canada’s intention was to give its competitor an unfair market advantage.

President Trump described Canada as the most difficult and unreasonable trade partner, asserting that Canada does not have a special status and will no longer receive preferential treatment. He further claimed that the U.S. has incurred an average annual trade deficit of $60 billion with Canada over the past decade.
