Scottish, Welsh, and Northern Irish Independence Leaders Convene for Joint Push
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, major independence parties in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have announced a joint, rare meeting today to advance their campaigns for independence and referendums. This significant gathering underscores a unified effort to pursue self-determination across the constituent countries of the United Kingdom.
The leaders involved, John Swinney, leader of the Scottish National Party, Rhun ap Iorwerth, leader of Plaid Cymru in Wales, and Michelle O’Neill, leader of Sinn Féin in Northern Ireland, are convening in Cardiff, the capital of Wales. Their objective is to strategize for the organization of referendums on the right to self-determination within their respective regions.
In a joint statement, these pro-independence figures indicated that their discussions would focus on constructive inter-party cooperation and identifying practical areas for collaboration in economic, energy, and broader European and international partnerships. They also issued a call to the UK government, urging it to take steps to prepare, plan, and facilitate constitutional changes in Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
This summit occurs just days after US President Donald Trump expressed support for a united Ireland, a sentiment that comes amid UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s continued rejection of a referendum in Northern Ireland. Scotland held an independence referendum in 2014, which narrowly passed for the unionist side. Since then, successive UK governments have consistently ruled out a new referendum in the near future.
For the first time since the devolution of power in 1999, the main pro-independence parties are no longer the largest parties by seat count in the Scottish and Welsh parliaments. However, in Northern Ireland, Sinn Féin has maintained its position as the largest party in the local parliament by seat numbers since 2022.
The regional parliaments hold substantial powers over areas including health, education, housing, transport, and the environment, along with certain fiscal authorities.
