Russia Urges Space Arms Control Treaty to Prevent Escalation

Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stated that an opportunity remains to prevent an arms race in space through a legally binding treaty prohibiting the deployment of offensive weapons, following U.S. acknowledgments of Pentagon activities with weapons in Earth’s orbit.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Mehr News Agency, quoting Reuters, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said on Wednesday that there is still a chance to prevent the formation of an arms race in space by drafting a legally binding treaty to prohibit the deployment of offensive weapons in space.

Ryabkov stated that Russia believes there is still an opportunity to prevent the emergence of an arms race in space and that the deployment of offensive weapons in space can be prohibited through the development of a binding legal treaty.

The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister’s remarks came after the United States acknowledged this week that the Pentagon is operating weapons in Earth’s orbit, an action considered a turning point in the militarization of space.
