UK Prime Minister Burnham Condemns Israeli Actions in Gaza, Calls for Immediate End to Violence
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has stated that the events of October 7th do not justify the actions of the Israeli regime in Gaza and the West Bank, calling for an immediate end to the killing and suffering of the Palestinian people. Burnham emphasized this during his address at the United Nations General Assembly.
Highlighting the high number of Palestinian casualties, particularly children, and the severe restrictions on humanitarian aid entering Gaza, Burnham described the situation as unbearable. He criticized the erosion of the peace outlook, stressing that settlement plans, such as the ‘E1’ plan in the West Bank, must not be allowed to destroy the possibility of an independent and viable Palestinian state by creating geographical divisions.
The Prime Minister also declared the occupation of Palestinian territories illegal and underscored the necessity of sanctioning settlers. In another part of his speech, Burnham affirmed the UK’s continued military and financial support for Ukraine, accusing Russia of targeting the country’s energy infrastructure. He announced the establishment of a ‘National Intelligence Defence Centre’ in the UK to counter Kremlin intelligence operations and misleading narratives.
Regarding maritime security, the British leader stressed the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation in the Persian Gulf. This comes as Tehran has consistently maintained that the security management of the Strait of Hormuz rests with the coastal states, and that foreign interference only exacerbates insecurity. In the realm of technology, Prime Minister Burnham revealed cooperation with the United States on artificial intelligence to protect critical infrastructure and called for the development of global standards for managing the risks associated with this technology. He also identified the climate crisis as a threat to national security and characterized the transition to clean energy as an opportunity for economic growth and job creation.
