India Floods Claim at Least 56 Lives Amidst Extreme Rainfall

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, severe rainfall in recent days across the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh has resulted in widespread flooding and landslides, claiming the lives of at least 56 individuals. Reports also indicate that 12 people have died in neighboring Nepal.

Rishikesh Bhaskar Yashod, the head of the disaster relief command in Uttar Pradesh, announced on Sunday that India’s most populous state experienced 66.5 millimeters (2.6 inches) of rainfall from Friday to Sunday morning. This is significantly higher than the usual average rainfall of 7.6 millimeters (one-quarter inch) for the same period.

The official’s office stated that the fatalities, along with 46 injuries, occurred during a period of “exceptionally heavy rainfall affecting vast areas of Uttar Pradesh.”

The office further reported that over 1,000 homes sustained damage due to the movement of “a low-pressure system from the Bay of Bengal towards land, intensifying rainfall in the region.”
