Pope Leo XIV to Undergo Lung Surgery for Early-Stage Growth

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Pope Leo XIV will undergo surgery for a small lung growth. Based on data published by the Mehr News Agency, citing Reuters, Pope Leo XIV announced that doctors identified a small mass in his lung during recent medical examinations. He is scheduled for surgery to have it removed in the coming days.
The 71-year-old pontiff stated on Sunday, speaking to the public in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican, that the condition was detected in its very early stages and its extent is clear. He added that doctors recommended surgery and he has decided to proceed according to their advice.
The Vatican’s press office announced that the Pope’s recovery period is expected to last approximately one week.
Pope Leo XIV, who was elected to his position in May 2025, is scheduled to embark on an 11-day trip to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru from November 6 to 17.
