Former US Diplomat Warns Netanyahu Toxic Image Drives Democratic Alienation

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Dan Shapiro, the former United States ambassador to the occupied territories, asserted in an interview with the Israeli news outlet Ynet that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu possesses a toxic political persona, resulting in a distinct reluctance among Democratic lawmakers to engage in cooperation.
The former diplomat noted that within the Republican camp, Netanyahu’s name is inextricably linked to the ongoing confrontation with Iran—a factor he cited as contributing to Republican setbacks in recent midterm elections. According to Shapiro, American citizens strongly oppose such conflicts and their exorbitant costs, warning that unless a fresh leadership emerges in Israel, prospects for repairing bilateral relations with the United States remain bleak.
Highlighting the necessity of political transition, Shapiro described the formation of a cabinet featuring new figures as the primary and most fundamental step forward. He stressed that Tel Aviv’s policies in the West Bank require a significant overhaul, which includes cracking down on settler violence, halting settlement expansion, and implementing President Donald Trump’s framework in Gaza. Furthermore, he pointed out that nearly all congressional Democrats are now advocating for cuts to US military assistance to Israel, a reality that Israeli leadership must confront.
Despite these critical assessments, the former official acknowledged that a segment of the Democratic Party still maintains that ensuring the security of the Israeli regime aligns with overarching US strategic interests, viewing shared adversaries as common threats to both nations.
