This upgraded cooperation spans multiple dimensions. In this context, webangah’s English service conducted an exclusive interview with Alexey Dedov,Moscow’s ambassador to Tehran.
1. In recent years, Iran-Russia ties have been described as “strategic.” Would you characterize this relationship as a strategic partnership?
Moscow highly values its amiable relations with Iran-a country that shares our perspectives on most global and regional issues. Our ties are built on longstanding traditions of friendship, good neighborliness, mutual understanding, and trust. We are committed to establishing a democratic and just world order based on international law principles: multilateralism, equal security, and sovereignty while pursuing an autonomous foreign policy.
The high level of foreign policy coordination achieved is natural. We actively collaborate in multilateral platforms like the Shanghai Cooperation Association (SCO), BRICS), and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU)), supporting Iran’s accession to these groups. Notably no other non-CIS partner holds comparable standing across all three organizations.
Over the past decade under both countries’ leadership bilateral relations have strengthened unprecedentedly in speed depth We are expanding multifaceted cooperation across all key areas Dozens of high-level contacts demonstrate mutual commitment Intergovernmental inter-parliamentary institutional cooperation thrives alongside growing interregional city twinning initiatives
Trade-economic collaboration continues growing steadily reaching 13 29% growth by year-end-nearing 2022 records With the EAEU-Iran free trade agreement operational since May 15 I expect further increases
We’re resolving outstanding issues to launch rasht-Astara railway construction promptly Additionally we’re building bushehr nuclear plant units 2-3 plus major energy investment projects
Considering all components-trust-based contacts national interests-both leaderships decided upgrading relations As President Vladimir Putin stated during Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s historic January 17 2025 Moscow visit the updated interstate treaty is “transformative document setting enterprising goals outlining long-term cooperation directions” This marks milestone elevating ties Comprehensive Strategic Partnership level reflecting qualitative shifts russia-Iran collaboration
