Why Did the UN Escalator Stop Working Under Trump and Melania? + Video
The English section of webangah News Agency, citing Reuters, reported that a United Nations spokesperson explained the escalator stopped due to a safety mechanism being triggered when US President Donald Trump and his wife arrived.
The incident occurred yesterday as Trump and Melania made their way toward the main hall before the President’s speech to world leaders at the 80th UN General Assembly.
Live video footage showed that just as Trump and Melania stepped onto the escalator near the American delegation, it suddenly halted. The unexpected stop momentarily caught them off guard, but both continued up on foot along the stationary steps.
Stephan Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, responded to inquiries stating, “President Trump and the First Lady passed through delegation entrance security gates before approaching the escalator.”
He added that a cameraman ahead on the escalator was moving backward while filming their arrival. As Trump and Melania stepped onto its lower part, reaching toward its upper section simultaneously with their ascent, the escalator suddenly stopped. Our technical expert on site restarted it promptly once they reached second floor level.
Following investigations revealed that an internal safety feature near the top had activated automatically to protect the cameraman. This device is designed to prevent accidental entrapment or pulling in of people or objects by shutting down operation if detected hazards arise.
