Oliyanov: IAEA Will Address Iran’s Case Only Within Safeguards Framework
Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, wrote on X (formerly Twitter) today, Friday, that UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed the 2015 nuclear deal, will expire tomorrow.
Ulyanov added that with this expiration, the JCPOA will no longer exist. The international Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will address iran’s nuclear issues only under the thorough safeguards agreement. We are witnessing a new situation regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
UN Security Council Resolution 2231 endorsed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in 2015. It came into effect on October 18, 2015 and its ten-year validity period ends tomorrow. After this date, all arms and missile restrictions outlined therein will be lifted under international law.
Accordingly, recent claims by the European trio about maintaining certain restrictions lack any legal or international basis and are thus invalid.
