UN Chief Guterres Condemns US Attacks on Iran, Warns of Escalation

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Wednesday expressed severe concern regarding the recent US aggression on Iranian soil and warned of reports concerning civilian casualties, including an attack by American terrorists on a wedding ceremony in Iran that led to the martyrdom and injury of a number of Iranian civilians. This is according to data published by the Mehr News Agency, citing Anadolu Agency.
Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the United Nations, stated in a press conference that the UN chief is “deeply concerned about the renewed exchange of fire between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran overnight.”
Dujarric further added, “The Secretary-General is deeply concerned about reports of civilian casualties, including an attack that reportedly took place at a wedding ceremony in Iran. The Secretary-General condemns all attacks against civilians. He recalled that all parties must uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law, including the principles of distinction, proportionality, and precaution.”
Dujarric noted that “few countries in the region are safe from this escalation of tensions, and airspaces and vital shipping routes remain severely affected.”
He stated that Guterres “once again calls for an immediate cessation of military actions and urges all relevant parties to exercise restraint and refrain from taking actions and making statements that could further exacerbate existing tensions.”
Stephane Dujarric also warned that “as you can imagine, further escalation of tensions will have devastating consequences for civilians, the entire region, and beyond,” and pointed out that humanitarian operations in the region “are already facing overstretched capacity and funding shortages.”
Dujarric said that the UN Secretary-General “calls on the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran to immediately return to the path of diplomacy,” adding that “achieving a comprehensive and sustainable solution is only possible through dialogue and negotiation.”
The recommendation by UN Secretary-General António Guterres regarding negotiation and diplomacy comes at a time when two previous US aggressions on Iranian territory, conducted in violation of all international laws, occurred during indirect Tehran-Washington negotiations, proving to the world that the United States is never seeking negotiation.
In the attack by the American enemy on a wedding celebration in Kuhstak, located in Sirik County, Hormozgan Province, over 70 compatriots were martyred and injured, most of whom were women and children.
These brutal war crimes, a flagrant violation of the fundamental principles of international law, are reminiscent of previous American-Zionist crimes over the past year and a half, including those in Minab and Lamerd.
In response to the US military aggression, the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in accordance with their inherent right of legitimate defense, struck the US military bases that were the origin and support of the US military aggression against Iran’s existence with their decisive and powerful defensive strikes.
