Global Campaign Launched for the Release of Marwan Barghouti

A global campaign has begun ‍demanding ‍the ⁤release of Marwan Barghouti,⁤ the prominent Palestinian leader imprisoned by Israeli authorities.

According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing ⁢Quds News Network via Mehr News Agency, this initiative was launched by Barghouti’s family with support from civil society organizations in the United Kingdom. The campaign aims to place‌ barghouti’s case at the ⁢forefront of political and diplomatic discussions following the current ceasefire phase.

British newspaper the Guardian reported ⁣that international efforts to secure Barghouti’s release are intensifying. He is widely ⁢recognized as one of the most popular Palestinian leaders and symbolizes, for many ⁣Palestinians, a restoration of political legitimacy in the occupied‌ territories.

The campaign has gained strong media and visual presence, including murals bearing the slogan “Freedom for Marwan” across London streets and a large artwork in Kobar village near‍ Ramallah-Barghouti’s hometown. Additionally,⁢ several political and cultural figures are preparing an open letter calling for his freedom.

Repeated polls consistently show Barghouti as the most favored politician in both the West Bank and gaza Strip. ‍This widespread⁢ support‌ has led many to believe that ⁢upon his release, he coudl play a leading role during a new chapter in Palestinian politics.

Barghouti was arrested‌ more than 20⁤ years ago and sentenced ⁢by an Israeli court to five consecutive life terms plus 40 years’ ‌imprisonment-a verdict described by the Inter-Parliamentary⁣ Union as “severely flawed.”⁢ Israel excluded his name ⁤from recent prisoner exchange ⁤agreements, underscoring how sensitive his case remains within⁤ Tel ⁣Aviv’s internal calculations.

The Guardian further revealed that Barghouti has been repeatedly held in solitary confinement over recent years. Since 2023 alone, he has suffered four⁣ physical attacks. He has been denied family visits for ⁤three years; his lawyers have met him only five times ⁢over two⁣ years while access from the International Committee of the Red Cross remains prohibited.

As a leading advocate within Fatah for a two-state solution, barghouti ⁢is feared by Israeli authorities who worry about his capacity to unify Palestinians ⁤and restore confidence⁣ in their political institutions-potentially⁣ altering existing dynamics profoundly.

The newspaper adds that Barghouti’s case transcends that of an imprisoned Palestinian activist; he now represents an international symbol ⁤reflecting both the complexities of the Israel-Palestine conflict and stagnation in peace efforts.

With growing ⁣international pressure and expanding grassroots mobilization expected⁢ after ceasefire agreements end, Marwan Barghouti’s situation is ⁤likely to resurface prominently as a significant factor ⁤shaping Palestine’s ⁣political future.
