Trump-Backed Conservative Candidate Officially Declared Winner in Honduras’ Controversial Election

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Nasry Asfura, the conservative candidate backed by U.S. President Donald Trump, has been declared the official winner of Honduras’ contentious November 30 presidential election. Asfura, representing the National Party, secured 40.27% of the vote, narrowly defeating his rival Salvador Nasralla of the Liberal Party, who received 39.53%. The ruling leftist party suffered a significant loss, with its candidate María Andreé Chávez finishing a distant third with 19.19%.
The announcement followed weeks of vote counting, which raised serious doubts about the electoral system’s integrity. Nasralla, a journalist by profession, refused to accept the results, reiterating allegations of widespread fraud and accusing electoral authorities of betraying the Honduran people.
President Trump had previously threatened to cut U.S. aid to Honduras if Asfura, his preferred right-wing candidate, did not prevail against Nasralla, who is of Lebanese descent. Trump had employed similar tactics in Argentina to support his ally Javier Milei, who was ultimately declared the election winner.
