Sudan Views US Ceasefire Proposal With Suspicion Amid Partition Concerns
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, official sources in Sudan have informed Al Jazeera that the country’s government views new proposals from Assistant U.S. President for African Affairs, who visited Sudan, regarding the details of a 90-day ceasefire with skepticism.
The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated that Khartoum has maintained its position in response to the previous American proposal. This development follows the Sudanese Supreme Defence Council, chaired by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, calling for the withdrawal of Rapid Support Forces from all their positions in the Darfur, Kordofan, and Blue Nile regions in three phases. This is in contrast to Washington’s proposal for a limited withdrawal.
Media reports indicate that the American proposal would allow the Rapid Support Forces to retain their positions in the Darfur region and large parts of Kordofan, as well as a land strip in the Northern State extending along Darfur to the border triangle with Egypt and Libya, in exchange for withdrawing from areas in the Blue Nile State.
Informed sources revealed that the absence of a timeline and binding guarantees signifies the establishment of permanent spheres of influence, paving the way for the practical partition of Sudan, similar to what occurred in Libya.
It is worth noting that Sudan has long been experiencing violent clashes between its army and the Rapid Support Forces militia, which have resulted in numerous casualties and displaced a massive number of people.
