Russia Warns Armenia of Economic and Political Repercussions of EU Alignment

Russia has cautioned Armenia that aligning with the European Union will incur significant economic and political costs, signaling potential isolation from its traditional economic bloc. This warning follows Armenia’s stated intention to pursue EU membership.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Russia has issued a stern warning to Armenia regarding the potential consequences of its move towards closer ties with Europe. Sergey Perminov, speaking in an interview with RIA Novosti, highlighted that Armenia would face considerable economic and political repercussions should it decide to join the European Union, thereby diverging from its current economic partnerships with Russia and the Eurasian Economic Union.

This development comes shortly after the Prime Minister of Armenia announced during a parliamentary session detailing the government’s agenda, that Armenia plans to initiate the process of applying for membership in the European Union in the future. This declaration signals a significant shift in Armenia’s foreign policy orientation.

Armenia’s pursuit of closer relations with Europe occurs at a time when the nation is grappling with substantial internal challenges, including political, social, and economic difficulties. Furthermore, the country has experienced military setbacks in its conflict with Azerbaijan.
