Third Drone, Explosives Found Near Leipzig/Halle Airport
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, German investigators have uncovered a third drone and suspected explosives connected to an unsuccessful attack this month on Leipzig/Halle Airport. German networks NDR and WDR, along with the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper, reported on Tuesday that the findings follow an initial incident on August 4th. This latest discovery adds to the ongoing investigation into the security breach at the key logistics hub.
Media reports indicate that the third drone was found on August 14th, ten days after the initial incident, in the western area of the airport. During their search, investigators also discovered approximately 50 grams (1.8 ounces) of a substance believed to be the military explosive hexogen. The presence of explosives raises serious concerns about the sophistication of the attempted attack.
Security sources cited in the reports have pointed to potential Russian intelligence involvement in the foiled attack, an allegation that has been firmly rejected by Moscow. The ongoing investigation aims to determine the perpetrators and their motives behind the incident, which targeted a vital transportation center.
On August 4th, a drone carrying explosives was found near an Antonov cargo plane from Ukraine, reportedly used for military supplies. Investigators also suspect that a second drone may have collided with a DHL cargo plane shortly after the airport was temporarily closed. The dual nature of the airport as a cargo and military logistics center, utilized by NATO and Ukrainian Antonov airlines for military resupply, underscores the strategic importance of the site and the potential implications of such attacks.
