ISIS used the mustard agent in the attack on the Syrian city of Maraa

On Thursday, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons identified the ISIS terrorist group as responsible for the 2015 attack on the city of Maraa in Syria; Sulfur mustard was used in this attack.

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) emphasized on the previous reports of this organization that mustard agent was used in the attack on this city near the Syrian border with Turkey.

The Hague-based organization said: There are reasonable grounds to believe that ISIS elements were involved in the chemical attack on September 1, 2015 in Maraa, Syria. The chemical agent was spread using one or more artillery strikes.

This organization has said that it has identified four people as the perpetrators of this attack, but it has not named them. This city was shelled on September 1 and 3 of the same year by the areas under the control of ISIS.

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons said: At least six projectiles released a black, sticky substance with a “pungent” and “garlic-like” smell when they exploded. At least 11 people who came into contact with the liquid substance experienced symptoms consistent with exposure to sulfur mustard.

The report of the research team was published after the 2022 findings by a fact-finding panel of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons regarding the use of sulfur mustard.

A report in 2015 indicated that mustard gas was used in an attack on Mara’a on August 21, 2015, which killed at least one infant.
