Head of Israeli Military Operations Resigns Amid Personal and Ethical Allegations

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the Israeli army announced on Tuesday that the head of its Operations Directorate, Yisrael Shoomer, requested to step down and retire from the army for personal reasons. The statement indicated that Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, the Chief of Staff, approved Shoomer’s immediate retirement request.

While the possibility of resignations among senior military officials was anticipated following repeated operational setbacks for the Israeli army on various fronts, particularly concerning Iran and Lebanon, Israeli media sources have presented conflicting accounts regarding the resignation of the head of army operations. Some outlets attribute the departure to personal reasons, while others suggest allegations of misconduct as the cause.

This resignation occurs as Israel’s Channel 14 reported that Shoomer, holding a high-ranking and sensitive position within the army, was a candidate for promotion from brigadier general to major general and for appointment as the military advisor to the Minister of Defense.

The Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper reported that the military police investigated Shoomer on Tuesday concerning accusations of ethical offenses and breaches of integrity. The newspaper added that Shoomer was effectively compelled to resign and be dismissed from his post, with the head of planning in the Operations Branch, identified as Colonel (A), set to assume his duties until a replacement is appointed.

Israel’s Channel 12, however, reported a different narrative, stating that Shoomer requested to withdraw from his duties and retire from the army due to ongoing investigations into allegations concerning public integrity. This media source emphasized that Shoomer was suspended following an investigation but opted to resign before the findings were announced.
