German Lawmaker: Ukraine Cannot Join EU for Up to 40 Years

A German parliamentarian has stated that Ukraine is unlikely to meet the European Union’s accession criteria for another three to four decades. He warned that Ukraine’s potential membership could fundamentally alter the EU’s current structure.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Stephan Kotter, a member of the German parliament, emphasized that Ukraine will not be able to meet the European Union’s criteria for membership for another 30 to 40 years. He added that if Ukraine were to join the European Union, the bloc would cease to exist in its current form. This is a clear issue, primarily because the European Union would become excessively expanded.

Earlier, Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, acknowledged that member states were not prepared to set a specific date for Ukraine’s accession. Additionally, a number of these countries oppose Ukraine’s membership.
