Russia Warns Against Politicizing UN Security Council on Iran, Citing Escalation Risk

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Vasily Nebenzya, Russia‘s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, emphasized that the UN Security Council should prioritize supporting political resolutions to issues involving Iran. Russia has affirmed its readiness to participate in such processes.
Nebenzya elaborated that politicizing the Security Council’s operations regarding Iran’s nuclear program will inevitably lead to increased tensions. Speaking during a Security Council session concerning Iran, the Russian representative indicated that such approaches could obstruct the groundwork for resuming activities by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in relation to Iran, noting that these activities have been undermined by the actions of the United States and the Israeli regime.
He further stated that IAEA reports do not indicate any actions by the Islamic Republic of Iran related to the military use of uranium. Consequently, there is no basis for a briefing session by the Security Council’s Committee 1737 regarding sanctions against Iran. This committee concluded its activities in 2015, and the Council has not adopted any resolutions to revive its work.
It is noteworthy that the UN Security Council, in an irregular session employing double standards, proceeded with a vote on Resolution 1737. With 11 votes in favor, it approved the review of the return of sanctions against Iran, a move that drew objections from Russia and China.
