Finland Lifts Ban on Nuclear Weapons Import and Possession

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Finland has officially repealed its prohibition on the import and possession of nuclear weapons. This significant policy shift was enacted through amendments to the nation’s nuclear energy and penal laws, which were formally approved by Finnish President Alexander Stubb on June 26, 2026. The updated legislation now permits the import, production, storage, and utilization of nuclear weapons on Finnish territory.
Finnish officials have repeatedly asserted that the country has no intention of becoming a nuclear power and does not plan to host nuclear weapons on its soil during peacetime. They also affirmed Finland’s continued commitment to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
However, the decision has elicited a stern response from Moscow. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov previously stated that the potential deployment of nuclear weapons in Finland would constitute a threat to Russia, and that appropriate measures would be taken by Moscow in response. Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, echoed these sentiments, characterizing the Finnish government’s decision to revoke the ban on nuclear weapons deployment as a tangible threat to Russia’s national security.
