Algeria’s Parliamentary Elections See 20.79% Initial Turnout

Algeria’s interim head of the Independent High Elections Authority announced an initial voter turnout of 20.79% for the country’s parliamentary elections. The vote is crucial for selecting 407 members of the National Assembly.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, preliminary results from Algeria‘s parliamentary elections indicate a turnout of 20.79 percent, as reported by Algerian media citing the Algerian Independent High Elections Authority. Karim Khalafan, the interim head of the commission, stated that four million 962,433 voters within Algeria and 91,170 voters abroad have cast their ballots so far. Official figures show 23,872,756 individuals in the country and 854,285 abroad were eligible to vote.

The Algerian parliamentary elections commenced on Thursday, with the aim of electing 407 representatives to the National Assembly for a five-year term. A total of 9,854 candidates are competing in this election, including 2,032 women, who constitute 21 percent of all contenders. Furthermore, 54 percent of the candidates are under the age of 40.

This election marks Algeria’s second parliamentary election since the events of 2019, which led to the resignation of Abdelaziz Bouteflika and subsequently the election of Abdelmadjid Tebboune as the country’s president.
