Shas Party Leader Calls Netanyahu a Liar, Expresses Doubt on Trustworthiness

The leader of the extremist Sephardi Haredi party Shas has publicly denounced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a ‘liar’ and ‘untrustworthy,’ suggesting the party might endorse Gadi Eisenkot, head of the National Unity Party, in upcoming elections.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the leader of the Talmudic and extremist Shas party, Yitzhak Yosef, has described Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a “liar and untrustworthy.” He further indicated that the party might support Gadi Eisenkot, the head of the National Unity Party, in the forthcoming elections.

Yosef, whose party is generally aligned with Netanyahu, cited disagreements with the Prime Minister and his cabinet over the compulsory military service for Talmudic students. He asserted that Netanyahu had misled them on the conscription law and other matters.

In an interview with the Israeli army radio, Rabbi Yosef stated, “We may join forces with Eisenkot in the next election and even support him for prime minister.”

Responding to these remarks, Eisenkot told Israel Army Radio, rejecting the statements and emphasizing that he would only collaborate with others based on the principle of compulsory military service for all segments of society, with no compromises on this issue.

Eisenkot expressed strong hope that the Shas party and other parties would return to reason and understand that Netanyahu’s concessions, particularly in this crucial week, weaken Israel and its army. He added that even if they gain concessions this week due to pressures Netanyahu cannot withstand, he hopes for representatives in the Knesset who can restrain him.
