Bahrain’s Al-Wefaq Reports Intensified Crackdown on Shia Clerics

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Al-Wefaq, the main opposition bloc in Bahrain, has reported an escalation in the crackdown on Shia clerics, with allegations of violent and degrading treatment in undisclosed detention centers. The statement, citing information received by the group, indicates that high-ranking officials have issued orders motivated by sectarian bias against Shia religious leaders.
The targeted clerics are reportedly subjected to physical assault, insults, threats, forced confessions, and other forms of humiliating treatment. Al-Wefaq detailed that several prominent clerics and directors of religious seminaries have been physically beaten by security forces. They also face severe restrictions, including being bound at their wrists behind their backs, having their faces completely covered, and being denied necessary medication and rest.
The organization explicitly holds the King of Bahrain and the Prime Minister directly responsible for what it describes as the organized sectarian suppression of Shia clerics. In its concluding remarks, Al-Wefaq urged the United Nations, international bodies, human rights organizations, governments, and other relevant entities to intervene to halt the “human rights violations and sectarian actions against Bahrain’s Shia population.”
