U.S. House Approves $1.15 Trillion Military Budget Amidst Partisan Debate
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday local time approved its version of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2027 by a vote of 216 to 212. The legislation authorizes an unprecedented $1.15 trillion for the U.S. defense sector.
The vote largely followed party lines, with all but seven Republicans supporting the bill and all but six Democrats voting against it. Democrats voiced objections to the substantial Pentagon budget, particularly as President Donald Trump and his Republican allies advocate for cuts to social programs. They also criticized the ongoing conflict with Iran, which the Pentagon estimates has cost the U.S. $37.5 billion and lacks broad public support.
Republicans, in contrast, argued that this level of funding is essential to support U.S. armed forces during the conflict with Iran, finance the development of defense systems, procure military equipment, and enhance benefits for service members, including a potential seven percent pay raise and the construction of barracks and family housing.
Another contentious provision in the bill significantly expands military technology cooperation between the United States and the Israeli regime. This has drawn criticism from Democrats, especially progressives, who are calling for reduced U.S. support for Israel due to the extensive civilian casualties in Gaza.
Should the final version pass both chambers, the bill will be sent to the White House for President Trump’s signature or veto.
